Over the past two years, San Francisco has been the city I feel the strongest connection with. By chance and circumstance, I’ve been lucky enough to spend a few months here and, along the way, meet some truly lovely friends.
When I first arrived, it was not long after the pandemic. Downtown San Francisco was still in a state of decline from waves of “smash-and-grab” incidents. To be honest, even though I had visited many cities in the U.S. before, I couldn’t help but feel uneasy this time. At first, I avoided going out at night. But as weeks passed, I found myself getting used to seeing “bent-back figures” on the sidewalks or even dealers in plain sight—things that once felt shocking but eventually became part of the city’s everyday background. It made me realize just how infinite our human ability to adapt really is.
What helped me shed my “visitor’s mindset” and start feeling more like a resident was, above all, my admiration for this city. I may sound a little dramatic, but San Francisco is probably my favorite U.S. city so far—maybe tied with New Orleans. The reason? The sheer abundance of parks and nature preserves scattered throughout the area.
As a floral artist, I’ve made it my mission to explore these green spaces one by one, often lingering far longer than I intended. In future posts, I’ll slowly share some of my favorites with you. For today, though, I’ll start with a quick introduction to Alamo Square Park.
Alamo Square is one of San Francisco’s most iconic parks, thanks to the world-famous “Painted Ladies.” These rows of Victorian houses might look sweet and approachable from the outside, but don’t be fooled—their price tags are anything but. Word has it they range anywhere from 60 to 150 million NTD (roughly 2 to 5 million USD). Surrounded by these pastel mansions, you can spread out on the lawn and enjoy a picture-perfect view of the city skyline. On sunny days, the park fills with locals picnicking or simply basking in the afternoon light.
Beyond its sweeping views, I also love the simple joys here—towering trees, patches of unusual flowers, and perhaps best of all, watching dogs play with their owners. Few things in life are as uplifting and stress-relieving as that.
That said, Alamo Square isn’t my absolute favorite spot in the city. But whenever I’m wandering around the neighborhood and need a break, I know it’s always worth stopping by for a moment of ease.
